Pilot Successful; Extended for a Further Two Years
Launched in early 2024, Action Table Calgary (ATC) is designed to provide immediate, co-ordinated support for Calgarians facing multiple risk factors and urgent safety concerns. This groundbreaking partnership between United Way of Calgary and Area (United Way), The City of Calgary and Calgary Police Service brought together agencies from across the region to address complex cases and deliver tailored community support.
Over the course of its year-long pilot project, ATC successfully addressed 108 cases. Initially, the table comprised 30 agencies, a number that grew to 51 by the end of the year, a testament to the increasing community commitment to this initiative.
How It Works
ATC focuses on individuals, families and communities facing complex, high-risk situations where physical or psychological safety is in jeopardy. Cases are anonymized to protect privacy and referred to ATC by trained community partners and the Calgary Police Service. A diverse array of service providers collaborate to ensure comprehensive support for those at risk.
When a referral is made, the table meets virtually to evaluate whether the case meets the threshold for acutely elevated risk (AER), which indicates an immediate risk of serious harm. For cases that meet the AER criteria, an urgent, co-ordinated response is initiated, often in fewer than four days. Cases that fall below the AER threshold still receive support and resources.
“The results of this pilot speak volumes about the strength of our community partners,” says Susan Brooke, vice president of community impact and partnerships at United Way. “By addressing crisis response through coordinating police with community agencies and community agencies with each other, we’ve demonstrated a more efficient and compassionate way to support those in need.”
On average, cases were resolved at the table level in approximately 17 days, reflecting the efficiency and dedication of the agencies involved. Cases remain open in the community until the needs are addressed, which can take some time, especially for complex cases.
Looking Ahead
As the pilot year concludes, the success of ATC highlights the power of collaboration in crisis response. The extension will allow ATC to continue its work in reducing risk for individuals and families in crisis, both immediately and systemically. As ATC grows and increases understanding of Calgarians’ needs, the program looks to address gaps in service and improve coordinated care through data collection, leadership and sector supports.
