For many Calgary families, back to school brings excitement and a fresh start. It also brings another round of expenses to household budgets already stretched by the rising cost of everyday essentials.
That’s why a backpack can mean more than school supplies. For a student, it can mean walking into the classroom confident and prepared. For a parent or caregiver, it can mean one less expense to worry about.
Together with United Way of Calgary and Area, Planet Youth, Fluor and community partners across Calgary and area, 485 backpacks filled with school supplies to Calgary students were filled to help them prepare for a new school year.
One single mother of four children shared the profound difference for her family.
“I do everything on my own so getting the backpacks is a little bit of a relief.”
Behind every backpack was a community effort. Fluor employees and volunteers planned, donated, packed and distributed supplies, turning corporate partnerships and workplace engagement into meaningful support for local families.
485 backpacks. 485 students. One community showing up for its kids.

Supporting young people goes beyond meeting one need. It means creating communities where they feel supported, connected and like they belong.
Through Signature Initiatives like Planet Youth, United Way brings Calgary together to create stronger connections, build a greater sense of belonging and help young people thrive.
Because when Calgary comes together, one less worry can become one more opportunity.
