Planned Giving
Invest in the future of your community
When many people think about charity, they often think of giving today—whether through workplace fundraising campaigns, monthly gifts or one-time donations. Planned giving is different.
Planned giving (also called legacy giving) is a way to make a lasting impact by including a gift to United Way of Calgary and Area (United Way) in your will or estate plan. These gifts can take many forms and often come with meaningful tax benefits for you and your loved ones.
All planned gifts to United Way are invested in our Tomorrow Fund. We use interest earned from this fund to sustain vital programs over time—strengthening our city for generations to come.
- Bequests (gifts in a will): Designate a specific gift or a portion of your estate to United Way and your estate will receive an official tax receipt.
- Life Insurance: Life insurance is an affordable option that allows you to make an extraordinary gift. You can transfer ownership of a new or existing policy, or you can make United Way a full or partial beneficiary of a policy you continue to own.
- Retirement Plans: You can designate United Way as a beneficiary of your RRSPs or RRIFs or even your TFSA. Your gift qualifies for an official tax receipt and can offset tax payable on other assets of your estate.
- Family Funds (Donor Advised Funds): A Family Fund is United Way’s version of a Donor Advised Fund, offering immediate tax benefits and the flexibility to direct your giving over time—all while engaging your family and passing down a tradition of philanthropy.

By planning for the future, you retain more of your assets, protect your estate and leave a legacy for yourself and your loved ones.
Everyone can benefit from the development of a will, regardless of age or financial position. A carefully drafted will is essential for your estate to be distributed in accordance with your wishes. It simplifies and speeds the transition of assets to the next generation, ensuring your beneficiaries are protected.
Planned giving isn’t just about the future—it’s a meaningful way to unite your family around shared values. Whether you’re just starting the conversation or building a family giving plan, United Way can help you explore options that reflect your goals and strengthen your legacy.

Including United Way in your will can provide your estate with a charitable tax receipt. A bequest is the most common type of planned gift.
Below is suggested wording for including United Way in your will. We strongly recommend you consult your professional advisors if you are considering including United Way in your estate plans.
“I give ($_____, or ____%, or specific asset) of my (estate or residual estate) to United Way of Calgary and Area to be held and administered as a non-endowed gift in the Tomorrow Fund (or, should such fund cease to exist, in the fund which is the successor to the Tomorrow Fund or in any other fund which is similar to the Tomorrow Fund) in accordance with such organization’s applicable practices and policies from time to time.”
