Who we are

United Way of Calgary and Area

United Way of Calgary and Area brings together more than 150 local sector agencies, corporations, donors, volunteers and government to create lasting social change in our city. As a local social impact organization, we strategically invest in, partner with and mobilize local community agencies to solve complex social issues. Our work and investments stay in Calgary and the surrounding area.

Last year, United Way assisted more than 270,000 Calgarians in accessing vital support — from basic needs and mental health services to programs that promote healthy relationships and foster a sense of belonging.

Call for Artists

As part of our partnership with BLOX Business Association, United Way is seeking a local mural artist to create a mural in the heart of the Beltline. The Beltline is meaningful to our work not only because it is where our current office resides, but also because several of our partner organizations are located there.

What the mural should reflect

This mural should reflect the resilience, prosperity and connectivity of our city, guided by United Way’s principles and the diverse voices of the individuals and communities we support.

Behind every number of those reached through United Way is a person who found a path forward. By supporting the next generation, aging populations, newcomers and those in urgent need while removing barriers to access, the mural should capture both the diversity and the resilience of Calgary.

Our work is also anchored in our Indigenous strategy, Akak’stiman — currently in its sixth year and guided by Elders — which shapes our business practices, investments and relationships to uplift and learn from Indigenous communities.

What to submit

Required information

Please be prepared to provide all of the following in your proposal:

  1. Artist statement (50–100 words) with portfolio link and social media channels. Include any similar past projects.
  2. Your experience as a Calgarian and how it guides your creative expression (max 400 words).
  3. A brief description of your creative process and how United Way and BLOX BIA can best support you (max 400 words).
  4. A brief explanation of how you envision the mural — themes, ideas, and styles. Concept does not need to be fully realized.
  5. Confirmation of availability for bi-weekly meetings throughout July.
  6. Confirmation of agreement to the $2,500 artist fee.
