Many years ago, when Lara Conrad moved to Calgary as a new engineering graduate, she was instantly struck by the warmth and generosity of her new city. Today, that sense of community inspires her involvement as both a Calgarian and a philanthropist.
“I feel incredibly fortunate to have called Calgary home for the past 25 years and to have raised my family here. Together, we strongly believe in giving back, supporting one another and that we all share responsibility in building community,” says Conrad.
These values, shaped by Calgary’s welcoming spirit, have deeply influenced her journey as a donor and community champion with United Way of Calgary and Area (United Way).
Why United Way? A Thoughtful Decision to Drive Change
For Lara, choosing where to donate is a commitment to sustainable impact. She was drawn to United Way because of its mission to create a community where everyone can thrive and its careful, strategic approach to addressing complicated issues.
“My decision on where to donate has two components, first, a cause I believe in, and second, it’s an investment,” Conrad explains. “I believe in building a healthy community, which is a core objective of United Way. I also trust United Way to make the most of my donation when the issues facing our community today are so complex. Complex problems require collaboration and teamwork to find lasting solutions – and United Way provides that link.”
Through her support, Conrad trusts United Way to connect funding with meaningful solutions, ensuring that her contributions are invested where they can have the most impact.
United Way of Calgary and Area was recently recognized on Charity Intelligence Canada’s Top 100 Charities list for 2024. Criteria for making the list include financial stewardship, results and overall impact.
“Our inclusion in this list is a testament to the rigour we put in place in identifying where to invest and making sure that we’re following the impact of those investments,” says Rhonda Roth, chief impact officer at United Way of Calgary and Area. Roth notes 89 cents of every dollar donated to the organization goes back to the community through local initiatives.
Targeting Impact through the Community Impact Fund
Conrad directs her support through United Way’s Community Impact Fund, which allows her donation to be used where it’s needed most. The fund’s flexibility ensures that her support contributes to long-term solutions for Calgary’s most pressing issues.
“The Community Impact Fund removes the guesswork of identifying where my donation will have the most impact and ensures that it will be part of creating long term solutions for the community,” Conrad says, knowing her support is aligned with United Way’s overall vision of building a stronger, healthier Calgary.
A Champion for Change: Lara’s Journey with United Way
Lara became involved with United Way in the late 1990s through corporate campaigns. Since then, she has been a dedicated donor and volunteer, serving as the 2022 Campaign Co-Chair and continuing as a board member. Each new role has deepened her respect for United Way’s work and increased her commitment to supporting its goals.
“I’m always impressed by the strength of the organization and the capabilities of United Way’s team,” she notes. “I’ve seen firsthand how they bring people together to solve complex issues in our community. Becoming more aware of Calgary’s needs has only spurred me to do all I can to support United Way’s vision of positive change.”
Inspiring a Culture of Giving in Calgary
Through her ongoing commitment to United Way and passion for giving back, Conrad exemplifies how one person’s journey can create a ripple effect of compassion and support across an entire community. Her story reminds us that building a stronger Calgary starts with individuals who believe in a brighter future for everyone.
