Yvette Biggs is the Vice President of Marketing and Communications for United Way of Calgary and Area. In this special guest blog, she is excited to share our “why” behind the Hope is in Your Hands campaign.

Yvette BiggsAs Vice President of Marketing and Communications for United Way of Calgary and Area (United Way) and having had the privilege of working with this incredible organization for the past eight years, I’ve seen firsthand the profound impact that a united community can make. It’s not just the amazing staff who bring their expertise and passion to the table daily, but also the countless volunteers and supporters who give their time, treasure, energy and hearts to support our community.

This year I’m excited to introduce our new awareness campaign, Hope is in Your Hands, which is more than just a slogan —it’s a rallying cry, a reminder that each of us holds the power to change lives and shape a better Calgary for everyone.

Hope is a powerful force and it doesn’t take much to spark it. A small donation, a few hours of volunteer work, or simply spreading the word about our cause can be the spark that ignites profound change. Even the smallest acts of kindness can inspire others and create a wave of positive change in our communities.

The Changing Face of Poverty

In Calgary, where the face of poverty is constantly evolving, this ripple effect is more important than ever. Poverty is no longer an issue confined to certain neighbourhoods or demographics. Today, it could be your neighbour, your co-worker or the family down the street who is struggling. The economic challenges of recent years have shown us that anyone can find themselves in need, often unexpectedly. Right now, one in four Calgarians can’t meet their basic needs like food, utilities and rent. This reality makes our work at United Way more critical than ever.

Ensuring Authenticity for Local Impact

When you give to United Way, you are supporting your local community; the images and videos in the Hope is in Your Hands campaign reflect this. We partnered directly with Calgary organizations like WINS, the Calgary Distress Centre, the Calgary Counselling Centre and the Sunalta Community Association to ensure we captured the essence, spirit and energy of their work that fuels what we do every single day.

Breaking Down the Myths: Get to Know Us

United Way often encounters myths and misconceptions about who we are and what we do. Some people may be unsure about how contributions are used or misunderstand the scope of our work, which can create a barrier to getting involved.

That’s why I challenge you—whether you’re an individual, a business or a community group—to get to know us better. Informed giving starts with understanding the true social impact of United Way’s work. Here are a few ways to do that:

Why Your Support Matters

Every day, thousands of Calgarians face challenges that may seem overwhelming—whether it’s poverty, mental health struggles or social isolation. But these challenges are not insurmountable. Hope is in Your Hands is a call to action, reminding each of us that our individual efforts, no matter how big or small, can create a ripple effect that touches lives across our community.

Through our Community Impact Fund, we provided stable funding for 134 agencies in 2023. We helped 223,242 individuals in Calgary and the surrounding area, with 91% reporting an improved quality of life. This work is possible thanks to our community’s support. United, we can accomplish so much more.

Be the Change

The challenges we face as a community are complex and interconnected, requiring a collective response. Now, more than ever, we need people like you to step up and be part of the solution. Joining the movement means becoming an active participant in the transformation of our city. It’s about standing together with your neighbours, friends and colleagues to create a Calgary where everyone feels they belong.

When you join the movement, you’re not just donating or volunteering; you’re becoming part of a powerful force for good. You’re helping to create a community where basic needs are met, mental health resources are accessible and everyone feels a sense of belonging. This movement is about more than just short-term fixes; it’s about creating lasting change that benefits all Calgarians.
