Across Calgary, many face challenges with basic needs, mental health and isolation. The Alex Community Health Centre works on the front lines to meet these needs with dignity, compassion and a commitment to full-person care.
In this episode of Hope in Action, United Way of Calgary and Area (United Way) Campaign Co-Chair Linda Olsen spends time at The Alex with CEO Joy Bowen-Eyre to explore how the centre’s team supports people during their most difficult moments. From the kitchen to the clinics, Joy shares how trust begins with small acts of care that grow into connections, stability and wellness.
The Alex offers a range of supports under one roof, including primary health care, youth programming, counselling, peer support, mental health services and social work. Their team-based approach means individuals don’t have to navigate the system alone. For many, their first step into The Alex is a warm meal, a safe space or a conversation with someone who truly listens.
The Alex Youth Health Centre supported by United Way for example, provides vital health and wellness services for young people. As well, through initiatives like the Alex Community Food Centre—one of our Community Hubs—providing meals becomes a powerful pathway to connect individuals with additional supports and services that help build healthier futures.

“Food is often where someone’s journey with us begins,” Joy says.
“Once they feel safe, we can help them see what other supports are available.”
