United Way of Calgary and Area (United Way) works alongside two volunteer campaign Co-Chairs each year who help lead our Fall fundraising efforts. These leaders bring their time, networks and passion to these campaigns—mobilizing Calgarians to create meaningful change.

We’re proud to introduce Linda Olsen as one of your 2025 Co-Chairs. Linda is a familiar face to many Calgarians and has worked as a respected journalist and community connecter for more than 30 years. Her career has been dedicated to amplifying the voices of those shaping our city—and now, she’s bringing that same commitment to United Way.

We sat down with Linda to hear what inspires her and what she hopes to achieve in the year ahead.

Why did you choose to take on the Campaign Co-Chair role?

As a long-time Calgary journalist, I have had the opportunity to report on the important work United Way does. When I was asked to serve as a Campaign Co-Chair this year, I thought it would be a great way to expand my knowledge of United Way and see firsthand the impact it is having in our communities.

I’ve always made it a priority to spend time in the community, seeing the challenges we face and the opportunities there are to help. That’s what inspired me to work with charities.

I’m a first-generation Canadian, and my parents, who immigrated to Calgary in 1957, always gave back as volunteers and community builders. I’m proud they chose this city.

I’m excited to help tell United Way’s story throughout the campaign to broaden awareness of the critical work of this organization.

What do you think Calgary does better than any other city? What makes Calgarians special?

Calgary is a city with a big heart!

We welcome diversity, innovation and hold true to the western spirit. It is a city where big ideas are launched, as we support and care for those around us, striving to create a stable foundation for everyone’s success and well-being.

You have a great Co-Chair in Scott Barron. What strengths do you see him bringing to the role and your partnership on the campaign trail?

Scott is an accomplished business leader who has enjoyed being connected to United Way campaigns in the past. He brings exceptional business acumen and a true understanding of the benefits of a corporate campaign—for employees who take part, and for the community.

I know he will be fun to partner with, as he’s proven he has a very big heart and witty sense of humour!

United Way has been in Calgary for 85 years. What do you see as its legacy? What are your dreams for the future?

85 years of commitment and working together within a community is something to celebrate. United Way of Calgary and Area has always been there to offer support to those most in need and the organization’s ability to understand what is needed, through challenges and triumphs, is an incredible legacy.

As Calgary continues to grow and prosper, the city’s social needs will become more complex. I believe United Way will continue to be a beacon of hope as it continues to build up our community through resilience and opportunity.

What does “United We Can” mean to you?

United We Can is such a powerful phrase. It speaks to our collective goal of coming together as a city and being united in a cause. It also is empowering; by letting supporters and recipients know we can make impactful social change together.
