Giving Tuesday started as a grassroots effort to raise funds ahead of holiday shopping days like Black Friday and Cyber Monday.
With the global buzz, it can become easy to lose sight of the local significance of your Giving Tuesday donation. At United Way of Calgary and Area, we partner with a diverse cross-section of partner agencies actively working to meet the needs of individuals and families in our communities. As a result, every dollar donated to United Way stays in Calgary and area. Your donation becomes a ripple that leads to a collective impact.

United Way Calgary and Area, along with our agency partners, we are working hard to ensure that no one is left behind, but the need continues to grow. For example, the Calgary Distress Centre reports a 30% increase in suicide-related contacts compared to last year. Total mental health contacts and calls are up 31% from 2020, with the most common COVID-19 related issues centring on anxiety, isolation, loneliness, and depression.
People in our neighbourhoods are hurting, but we can share the local love and multiply small-scale gestures across our entire community. A perfect example of this is United Way’s Match Program, where returning donors who want to grow their gift can have that portion matched.
Whether you choose to give 10 dollars or 10 thousand dollars, United Way takes the power of one individual gift to create a strong, united force for change. So this Giving Tuesday, we ask you to think local, act local and give local because United, we make the biggest difference.
